The "Brooks/Dietz" Project
Whole House Remodeling

When starting this project the homeowners told us the one thing they never wanted to own was a 1970’s split-level but that the location and the lot that their home was on over came all of their reservations and now was the time for a complete face lift.

The homeowners have many interests, but first and foremost is their love of gardening and entertaining. Every detail of the whole house renovation reflects this. The entire first floor is now an open space, which includes the dining, cooking and entertainment areas. The roof was completely removed and lifted to get as much volume as possible. The rear wall was raised and filled completely with 8 foot tall glass windows and doors. A custom wall of stone which includes a custom built entertainment equipment area and bookcases, a fireplace, along with a new staircase were added. We also completely rebuilt the entry as well as the dining room and the family room which are reserved for displaying their artwork collected from around the world.

The kitchen includes a wet bar area, a breakfast bar area and all the expected features of an updated gourmet kitchen. The entire rear of the home is a wall-to-wall bank of full view windows and doors, which lead to a new blue stone patio and terrace. This allows for a full view of the wooded gardens and lake beyond and also allows the homeowners to entertain outside as well as in. With the addition of a new covered entry, new window details and new exterior finishes of siding and stone, a “Modern Craftsman” style has emerged. By combining other Craftsman details on the interior a continuous style statement has emerged resulting in a home that now combines all the loves and interest of the owners.

Another feature of this home is one that you can not see on the surface. It is the fact that the home through this renovation process has become the fourth 5 star plus Energy Star rated reconstructed home in the state of Kentucky. The use of high efficient, variable speed, duel fuel HVAC equipment, high efficient windows and doors, and proper insulation methods have lead to home that will use 40% less energy than it did before construction. When you combine that with the fact that we reused all the brick during reconstruction, recycled over 60% of the waist from the project, and made a conscious effort to use renewable products during construction, this is a great example of “green” construction.
